NGC 2336 is a vast barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation of the Camelopardalis, at a distance of about 105 million light years from our Milky Way. The galaxy was discovered in 1876 by the German astronomer Wilhelm Tempel. NGC 2336 has a brightness class II-III and has a wide row at 21 cm of neutral hydrogen. It is also an active galaxy of the Seyfert 2 type; its nucleus occupies a very small space so it is classified as a retired nucleus galaxy. Given its surface brightness of 14.01, NGC 2336 can be classified as a galaxy with low surface brightness (in the English-language literature abbreviated to LSB, acronym for Low Surface Brightness). LSB galaxies are diffuse (D) galaxies with at least one magnitude lower than the surrounding night sky. NGC 2336 was used by Gérard de Vaucouleurs as an example of a galaxy of the morphological type SAB(r)sbc in his galaxy atlas. A study, based on near-infrared K-band brightness measurements for the NGC 2336 galaxy bulb, estimates the mass of the supermassive black hole believed to be at the center of the galaxy at 7.5 millionM⊙. On August 16, 1987, the supernova SN 1987L was discovered by American amateur astronomer Dana Patchick inside NGC 2336. The supernova has been classified as type II.
